Major General DGS Senarath Yapa RWP RSP ndu

Major General DGS Senarath Yapa RWP RSP ndu assumed duties as the 27th Commander of the Security Forces (Jaffna), on 17 December 2021.

Major General Senarath Yapa was born on 2 June 1968 and he is a proud product of Piliyandala Central College. He joined the Sri Lankan Army as an Officer Cadet on 16th March 1987 and was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant into the Gajaba Regiment (GR) in 1988, after completing his basic training at Sri Lanka Military Academy Diyathalawa. He assumed responsibilities as Platoon Commander of the 3rd Battalion of Gajaba Regiment on 10th December 1988 and 10 months later, he successfully completed the Special Forces Basic Course No-06 and voluntarily joined the Sri Lankan Special Forces (SF) on 10th October 1989.

Owing to his excellent command skills and decision making ability he has been assigned with many command, operation, staff, and instructor responsibilities at different tiers of the SL Army. Combat duties and humanitarian operations had kept him in the North and East of the country for over 22 years. His Command appointments include Platoon Commander in 3GR, Group Commander in 1SF, Squadron 2nd in Command, Bravo Squadron Commander, Senior Instructor of SFTS, BM - SF Bde, 2nd in Command 3SF, CO 1 and 3 SF, Commandant - SFTS, Commander - 593 Bde, Center Commandant - RHQ SF, Commander - SF Bde, BGS -SFHQ (Kilinochchi). Further, he has held the appointments of General Officer Commanding of 57 Infantry Division in Kilinochchi and the 14 Infantry Division in Colombo. He was the Commander of the Security Forces West, before he took over duties as Commander SFHQ Jaffna.

Major General DGS Senarath Yapa has participated in several military training programmes at home such as Special Forces Basic Training Course in 1989 and Defence and Strategic Studies Course and Leadership Program under AHQ in 2010. Other than the local training course, he has followed overseas training programmes such as Basic Parachute Course (1991) in India, Commando Course (1992) in India, Young Officers Course (1996) in India, Mid-Career Course (1996) in Pakistan, Military Observer Course (2012) in India, Battalion Commanders Course (2013) in China.

Major General Senarath Yapa is a graduate of the National Defence University of Beijing, China, where he earned his second Master Degree (MSc) in Strategic Military Studies. He had earned his first MSc in Management (Defence) from the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Sri Lanka. He also gained enormous amount of experience through various training workshops, exercises and seminars overseas. He has attended to the NESA CSS Executive Combating Terrorism Seminar (2007) in USA, Indo - Sri Lanka Joint Military Training Exercise ‘Mithra Shakthi’ Planning Conference 2012 - India, China - Sri Lanka Special Joint Operation Exercise (Coordination and Planning Conference) (2015) in China, 1st International seminar on “Operations in the Jungle” (2015) in Brazil, Tri-Lateral Counter Terrorism Exercise by Special Forces of Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Pakistan (2015) - Pakistan, Tri-Lateral Exercise Eagle Dash - 1 (2016) in Pakistan, Pakistan Army Physical Agility and Combat Efficiency System Competition (2016) in Pakistan, Pakistan, Army Physical Agility and Combat Efficiency System (2016) in Pakistan, Land Force Talks United States Army (Pacific command) (2017) Hawaii in USA.

Major General Senarath Yapa has been awarded with many medals and honours for his distinguished conduct, bravery, dedication and loyalty to the organization; Rana Wickrama Paddakama, Rana Soora Padakkama, Deshaputhra Paddakkma, Eastern Humanitarian Operation Medal, Wanni Humanitarian Operation Medal, Poorna Bhumi Padakkama, North and East Operations Medal with three clasps , Reviresa Campaign Service Medal, 50th Independence Anniversary Medal, Sri Lanka Army 50th Anniversary Medal, Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Services Medal, United Nations Observer Medal in Congo, Videsha Seva Padakkama, Sewabhimani Padakkama and Pasasum Sewa Padakkama.

Apart from his duties as Commander Security Forces - Jaffna, he performs duties as the Colonel of the Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army Special Forces Regiment.

Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa is married to Nayani Samanthi and they are blessed with two sons.
