Major General P R Wanigasooriya VSV USP ndu USACGSC
Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya is a career military officer of the Sri Lanka Army who at present serves as Commander Security Forces Jaffna, Colonel Commandant of the Regiment of Artillery and Chairman of the Army Cricket Committee. He is a proud product of Ananda College Colombo and was commissioned to Sri Lanka Artillery on 24 July 1986 after successful military training in Sri Lanka and abroad. During his career he has served in numerous Command, Staff and Instructional appointments at various levels.
He took over duties as Commander Security Forces Jaffna on 15 July 2019. The other notable command appointments he held include the Commanding Officer 6th Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery, Commander 512 Infantry Brigade, Commander 653 Infantry Brigade, and the General Officer Commanding 59 Infantry Division. He has served in special appointments as Military Assistant to the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, United Nations Military Observer in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Military Spokesman and Director, Media Centre for National Security of the Ministry of Defence.
He has also performed duties as General Staff Officer I (Operations), Director Training at Army Headquarters, Director Operations and Systems at the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff, Senior Instructor at Sri Lanka Military Academy, Instructor at Kotelawala Defence Academy, and Directing Staff and the Chief Instructor of Defence Services Command and Staff College.
He is an alumnus of the Indian School of Artillery, Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operations, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) of the Republic of Indonesia, and the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. He has earned Master's Degrees in Military Art and Science (USA), in Management Studies (Sri Lanka), and in Resilience Studies (Indonesia).
He is a recipient of the Uththama Seva Padakkama and the Vishishta Seva Vibhushana for unblemished and distinguished service to the nation.
