    Major General Don Dharshana Udaya Kumara Hettiarrachchi is an officer of the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers in the Sri Lanka Army.

   Born on 23 July 1964 and studied at Ananda College, Colombo from 1970 to 1983. He played Rugger and excelled in Army Cadetting at Ananda College and became the leader of the Army Cadet Band in 1982/1983. He was awarded College Colours in 1983 for his excellent performances in the Cadet Band. He had been a Junior Prefect/Senior Prefect and also a Prefects’ Supervisor before leaving the school.

    After the Advanced Level Examination, he joined the Army as an Officer Cadet in March 1984 and Commissioned on 16 November 1985. During his military career, he has commanded the 5 Field Engineer Regiment deployed in Jaffna from 2000 to 2003, commanded the 222 Infantry Brigade deployed in Kantale in 2010/2011, commanded the 22 Infantry Division deployed in Trincomalee in 2012/2013 and commanded the 23 Infantry Division in Punani, Batticaloa from 2014 to 2016, and commanded the Security Force - East in Welikanda in 2016/2017. Thereafter he was appointed as the Commander Security Force - Jaffna on 28th March 2017.

   He had been an instructor/lecturer at the Sri Lanka Military Academy (1988/1989), Kothalawala Defence University (1994/1995) and the Defence Services Command and Staff College (2001 to 2003). He was the Commandant of the Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering in the year 2005. He has also held number of staff appointments such as General Staff Officer 1 at the then Task Force 2 at Elephant Pass (1996/1997), General Staff Officer 1 at the Directorate of Plans at the Army Headquarters (1998/1999), Colonel General Staff of the Security Force Headquarters - East (2005), Colonel Military Secretary (Additional) at the Army Headquarters (2006/2007) and Assistant Military Secretary at the Army Headquarters (2008/2009).

    Major General Hettiarrachchi is a Graduate of the Defence Services Command and Staff College in Bangladesh (1997/1998). He successfully completed the training programme titled the "Mastering Education of Strategic and Resilience Studies at the National Resilience Institute (equivalent to a National Defence University) in Indonesia from 2 July 2013 to 9 October 2014. The title of the thesis submitted by Major General Hettiarrachchi during the above training programme was "Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Ex-Combatants for the Stability and Development in Sri Lanka".

    He has attended number of military training courses (local/abroad) and apart from such training, Major General Hettiarrachchi has followed under mentioned educational programmes to obtain academic qualifications during his military career:

a. Course on the "Contemporary Global Scene" at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (1995).

b. Diploma in International Affairs at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (1998/1999).

c. Diploma in Senior Level Defence Management at the University of Indore, India (2001).

d. Course on "Open Air Diplomacy" at the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (2001).

e. Diploma in Youth in Development Work at the Open University of Sri Lanka (2004/2005).

f. Postgraduate Diploma in Conflict Resolution (PgD.CR) at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo (2010).

g. Degree of Masters in Conflict Resolution at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo (2013). The title of the thesis submitted for the Masters Degree was "Impact of the Humanitarian Demining for the Development Work and the Resettlement of Refugees in the North and East of Sri Lanka".

     Major General Hettiarrachchi was appointed as the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation under the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms in February 2012 and he held that appointment until July 2013. His contribution to transform ex terrorists (LTTE) to be peace loving useful citizens in Sri Lanka was highly commended by the relevant authorities. Although Major General Hettiarrachchi is an officer from the Corps of Engineers of the Sri Lanka Army, he had been awarded the "Rana Sura Padakkama" on three occasions for his acts of bravery in facing the enemy in the battle field during early stages of his career. Furthermore, he is a Senior Fellow at the National Security Think Tank of the Institute of National Security Studies, Sri Lanka.

    Major General Hettiarrachchi who is commonly known as Dharshana is a vegetarian. He was awarded the "World Buddhist Outstanding Leader" award by the Dharma Buddhist University in Malaysia on 22 July 2017 for his outstanding contribution to protect and foster Buddhism in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. His greatest pride in his 33 years of military career is to have maintained a clean and an unblemished record of conduct. He is married to Mrs. Ajantha Kumari Liyanarachchi and blessed with two daughters and a son.
