A significant milestone was achieved on 30 June 2017 with the official handover of upgrading health facilities in Velanai Rural Hospital and Chankanai Divisionala Hospital in Jaffna with the assistance of troops of Security Force Jaffna.

This project placed emphasis on development initiatives to improve the quality of life for conflict affected returnee communities, particularly in the North. Resettled communities have undergone significant challenges associated with lack of suitable infrastructure, in particular in the health sector. The support provided by Sri Lanka Army contributed greatly to lessen some of these challenges, which in turn contributed to enhance the living standards of the civil community.

The project was carried out by the Security Force Headquarters, Jaffna, under the guidance of itís commander, Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi, with the blessings of Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army. This gigantic project costs 6.8 million rupees. The upgrading offer required accommodation facilities for the Medical Officers to ensure round the clock availability of medical assistance to the innocent people in Velani and Chankanai.

The 5 Corps of Engineer Services Regiment has provided the technical and instrumental assistance while troops of 18 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and 2 Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment provided work assistance and toiled day and night to bring the project to fruition. This project was completed within a record span of seven months from the inaugural cornerstone-laid on 30 November 2016 in line with the government's reconciliation efforts. This state-of-the-art civil-military joint effort, a mirror that reflects growing interactive cordial relations and sentiments of reconciliation.
